Setting layers

I heard on your video, "Godot nodes 101 - area 2D beginner" (an excellent video done by James), that it wasn't necessary to set the Layer for each node (although he prefers to set it anyway), but this makes no sense to me. If you don't set it, how would Godot be able to make the correct association between the layer and node? You did set it here, which I was glad to see, but is there some other way that Godot makes the association perhaps?

By default, all nodes use layer 1 and mask 1, so they will all collide with and detect one another. That's why it's not *necessary* for collisions to work, even though I'd recommend setting them up every time.
